SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's swimming and diving team defeated Air Force 174-106 on Saturday, while the men won by a score of 194.5-105.5. The women improve to 8-0 overall and 5-0 MWC. The men improve to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the MWC.
For the women, Utah took a 13-4 lead after the 200 medley relay, finishing first and third in the event. Utah's lead grew to 25-11 after the 1000 freestyle with Utah senior Marta Stepanczuk claiming top honors with a 10:31.44 time. Rachael Curci (1:55.62) and Adrienne Coburn (1:57.80) finished first and second, respectively, in the 200 free to help Utah hold a 40-15 lead in the meet.
In the 100 backstroke, Utah's Jamie Trapp finished first with a 59.19 mark, and Leah Jensen (1:01.32) and Kendall Smith (1:01.93) finished second and third respectively, to help Utah hold a 56-18 edge over the falcons. Caitlin Tidwell (1:09.27) and Lezah Huff (1:10.42) finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke behind Air Force's Carly Omizo (1:08.08).
Alison McInturff finished first in the 200 fly, and Katie Hathaway finished second in the event to help Utah increase its lead to 77-32. McInturff posted a 2:13.34 time, while Hathaway finished with a 2:15.68 mark. Before the first break, Amber Walker finished first in the 50 free with a time of 24.96, while freshman Maddie Stapley finished second in the event with a 25.89 time.
Melissa Young took top honors in the 100 free with a time of 54.59 to put Utah ahead of the Falcons 118-47. In the 200 back, Utah claimed the top three spots, with Jamie Trapp (2:06.78) finishing first, Leah Jensen (2:15.36) in second and Aubrey Smith (2:18.98) in third. In the 200 breast, Coburn and junior Ariane Kich finishing first and second respectively.
Sophomore Kelsey Patterson finished first in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 264.85. Patterson also finished first in the 3-meter event with a score of 308.65.
For the men, Utah finished first and third in the 200 medley relay to jump to a 13-4 lead over the Falcons. However, Air Force would close the gap to two at 19-17, after claiming the top two spots in the 1000 free. Utah's Eric Jorgensen finished third (10:04.38) behind Matt Karmondy (9:50.51) and Ryan Fitzgerald (9:54.96) of Air Force.
Air Force took a one-point lead after the 200 free at 27-28 after Chris Knaute of Air Force finished first with a time of 1:41.01 and Utah's Andrew Cole (1:43.76) and Matan Ratz (1:44.81) finished second and third respectively. The Falcons lead would grow to 33-41 over the Utes, after Evan Parr and Paul Parmenter of Air Force finished first and second in the 100 back, and Utah's Sebastien Bedaw finishing third with a 53.99 mark.
Utah would reclaim the lead at 47-46 and never relinquish it after Evan Castro (58.50) and Nick Galen (1:00.68) finished first and third in the 100 breast. In the 200 fly, senior Cody Rempfer finished first with a time of 1:52.19, while Andrew Brown finished second with a 1:54.62 time.
In the 50 free, Utah's Jonathan Larsen posted a 21.35 time to take top honors, while David Maasberg (21.59) finished second, and Matt Bailey (21.84) tied for third place to put the Utes up 77.5-53.5. Larsen also won the 100 free with a time of 45.94 and Maasberg finished third in the event with a 47.65 mark. Galen won the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.28, while Castro came in second with a time of 2:09.65.
Utah dominated the diving competitions, with Sterling Richards finishing first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Richards scored a 334.95 in the 1-meter event, with Damien Brown and Harley Davis finishing second and third respectively. Richards scored 284.25 points in the 3-meter event, with Jacob Jewett and Brown finishing second and third respectively.
Utah is back in action next weekend Feb. 6, when they take on in-state rival BYU at Ute Natatorium. The meet starts and 6 p.m. MST.
