Eugene, Ore. - The University of Utah women's tennis team lost a close 4-3 match to No. 64 UC Irvine today at a neutral site in Oregon.
In doubles play, the Utes fared well but did not manage to get the one point lead. At No.3, Utah duo of sophomore Cinthia Saucedo and junior Allison Hansen dispatched Jessica Broadfoot and Jayme Hu (8-3).
Utah posted wins at the No. 3, 5 and 6 singles positions. Sophomore Whitney Eber defeated Hui Leow in three sets (6-2, 2-6, 7-5). Freshman Cheyenne Reveche also took three sets to dispatch her opponent Kristina Boss (2-6, 6-3, 6-1). Freshman Jen Wencel picked up a victory by beating Broadfoot (5-7, 7-6(7), 6-4).
Head Coach Megan Dorny comments on the match. "This was a team that we lost 6-1 to last year. For our second match of the year, it was a great match. We show a lot more depth at the bottom of the line up. With a little more work in doubles, we will be there."
The Utes play the University of Portland tomorrow, Jan. 23 at 9:00 a.m.
