EUGENE, ORE. - The University of Utah women's tennis team completed its first match of the season with a 6-1 loss to No. 27 Oregon. The Utes battled two highly ranked singles players and one ranked doubles team.
In singles, Sophomore Whitney Eber played at the No. 3 and posted a win by default against Davina Mendiburu (5-7, 0-1, inj.).
Utah newcomers Liz Ferris and Emily Kwok started at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Ferris fell to No. 31 Daria Panova (6-4, 6-2) at No. 1. Oregon's Dominka Dieskova, No. 34, dispatched Kwok (6-3, 6-0) at the No. 2.
In doubles, Utah fought hard but failed to pick up any points. Ferris and Kwok teamed up at the No. 1and fell to the No. 45 ranked Oregon duo of Panova and Dieskova.
Next up, Utah faces No. 64 UC Irvine today at noon. Competiton takes place at a neutral site in Eugene, Ore.
