SALT LAKE CITY-
THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah men's golf team starts the season off by competing in back-to-back tournaments. The Utes start a new era under Head Coach Randall McCracken, who begins his first season at the helm of Utah golf. Utah returns five members of last year's squad, and welcomes four new faces to the team.
The Utes travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete in the U.S. Air Force Gene Miranda Invitational, which takes place at the Eisenhower Golf Course September 9-11. Utah then travels to compete at the Oregon State University Collegiate Classic September 12-14 at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore.
2003-04 SEASON RECAP:
The 2003-04 season recently came to an end for the Utah golf team. The year included several highlights, both on the team and individual side. Utah placed sixth at the Mountain West Conference Championships with its top finisher being Ashdon Woods 14th overall (222, 74-77-71). The MWC is one of the tougher golf leagues in the country, with five MWC teams ranking in the Golf Week Top 40 heading into the conference championships.
The Utes wrapped up the season with three second-place finishes: the Falcon Invitational, Wolf Pack Invitational and the Countrywide Intercollegiate. The best team score for Utah came at the Wolf Pack Invitational where it shot a combined 847 (288-285-274). Over the regular season, Utah finished in the top 10 in nine of the 12 tournaments it competed in, five of which were top five finishes.
Garrett Clegg qualified for the NCAA West Regional, where he finished tied for 81st overall. Clegg was the first Ute to qualify for the regional since the 2000 season when Ryan Ellis finished in a tie for 18th. He was also named to the all-Mountain West Conference team for the second year in a row.
QUOTING COACH RANDALL McCRACKEN:
"I'm real excited about these two opening tournaments. We're starting the year with a very young team, three true freshman, a redshirt freshman and one senior. Up to this point, these are the guys who are playing the best golf. We've worked hard in our initial practices and I feel we are well prepared. The guys are playing very well right now and I expect to see this continue in these first two tournaments."
