LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Utah outdoor track and field teams finished the third day of competition for the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championships on Friday, May 14. After three days of competition, the four-time defending conference champion BYU women's team and the BYU men's team are in first place. Utah's women's team is in sixth with 11 points while the men are also in sixth place with eight points.
Leading the way for the women were Amanda Feigt, Susan Atwater, Mandie Rowell, and Sarah Romig. Feigt finished third in the long jump with 6.00m. Atwater and Rowell finished sixth (3.65m) and ninth (3.52m), respectively, in the pole vault. Romig finished eighth in the javelin with 39.35m, a new personal record.
The Utes got several impressive performances in the preliminary events. Nellie Hammons finished third in the 800 meter (2:17.03) and will advance to the finals. Andrea Davidson also qualified for the finals of the 800 by finishing eighth (2:13.94). Jennie Haertel had another impressive performance in the 1,500 meter, finishing first (4:34.81) and advancing to the finals.
On the men's side, veterans Nephi Tyler and Jeff Davidson and newcomer Dustin Cutrer led the way. Tyler took seventh (3:51.76) in the preliminary 800, and qualified for the finals. Davidson finished seventh (9:31.08) in the steeplechase. Cutrer had another impressive performance in the javelin finishing sixth with 59.87m, a new personal record.
"We're off to a very strong start," states Head Coach Lisa Archer. "This is the first time in a long time that we've scored points in the men's field events, and we are on pace to tie our team record for total points scored. There is a possibility that we could slip in to the forth-place spot tomorrow."
