Rachel Tidd To Miss NCAA Championships With Mono

Utah's star freshman all-arounder Rachel Tidd, who last week won the NCAA regional vault championship with a 9.95, will not be able to compete in the upcoming NCAA Championships after being diagnosed with mononucleosis.
Tidd, a U.S. National Team member, was off to a sensational freshman season. She had a 39.675 season-best all-around score and recorded highs of 10.0 on vault, 9.95 on bars, 9.90 on beam and 9.925 on floor. She was expected to contend for individual national titles on vault and bars. Tidd felt ill at the regional championships on April 3 and pulled out of the floor lineup after a fall off the beam-Utah's first event. She then tied for first on the vault with a 9.95 and scored a 9.90 on the bars in Utah's final rotation to help clinch a Ute win.
A native of Fallbrook, Calif., Tidd anticipated competing in front of a large contingent of family and friends at the NCAA Championships in Los Angeles.
She will be replaced in the bar lineup by sophomore Kristen Riffanacht, who has not competed a bar routine to count this year. She has a career-best of 9.85 on the apparatus, scored in 2003. Riffancht will become an all-arounder with her bar assignment.
Tidd's replacement on beam will be sophomore Gabriella Onodi, who has a 9.85 best and will be competing for the first time since March 12. Filling in on floor will be freshman Nicolle Ford (9.925 best) and on vault will be freshman Stephanie Lim (9.875 best).
Tidd becomes the second Ute gymnast in recent years to miss an NCAA Championships with mono. In 2000, then-sophomore Kylee Wagner was diagnosed with the illness late in the season and could not compete at nationals. An injury-plagued Ute team surprised everyone by placing second to UCLA that year at the NCAA Championships in Boise.
