THE 2004 MWC CHAMPIONSHIPS:
The 2004 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship will be held April 29-May 1 at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. This will mark the fourth consecutive year the event will be held at the resort. The men will once again play the Crosswater Course (Par 72/7,270). Situated on 600 magnificently scenic acres of woodlands and carefully preserved wetlands, Crosswater is threaded by the gently flowing Deschutes and Little Deschutes Rivers.
The three-day tournament will consist of all eight schools from the conference: Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming. The teams will tee-off at 9:30 a.m. (PT), in a paired format. The Utes will tee-off with Colorado State on Thursday morning for the first of three rounds of competition. HIGHLIGHTING THE UTE GOLFERS:
Competing for the team this week is Garrett Clegg, Casey Fowles, Carl Jensen, Luke Swilor and Ashdon Woods.
Garrett Clegg- Coming off an all-conference finish last season, Clegg has not skipped a beat this season. He won the individual crown at the Wolf Pack Invitational with a score of 205 (69-68-68). Adding to that victory, he posted a second-place finish at the Braveheart Classic and placed third at the Falcon Invitational. Clegg has had the low score for Utah in six of the 12 tournaments this season.
Casey Fowles- Fowles heads into the conference tournament fresh off leading the Utes at the Cougar Classic. His top finish of the season came at the Countrywide Intercollegiate, where he placed fifth with a score of 214 (70-76-68).
Carl Jensen- This senior has been a solid contributor for the Ute team this season. Jensen has participated in all but one tournament and has a top finish of 15th at the Ron Moore Classic. His best score came at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in mid-April, where he shot a score of 217 (75-70-72).
Luke Swilor- Competing in all 12 tournaments, Swilor has shown the ability to take over a tournament when his game is good. His season-best was a second-place finish at the Falcon Invitational, where he finished with a score of 210 (71-68-71). Swilor has been the top finisher for the Utes in four different tournaments this season.
Ashdon Woods- Woods has competed in the last four tournaments for the team. He adds depth to the starting rotation and has shown the ability to put up low scores. His top finish came at the Cougar Classic, where he earned 26th place, with a score of 217 (70-70-77).
THE 2003-04 SEASON AT A GLANCE:
Utah completed the regular season on Saturday with its fourth-place finish at the Cougar Classic. The team finished with three second-place finishes overall, at the Falcon Invitational, Wolf Pack Invitational and the Countrywide Intercollegiate. The best team score for Utah came at the Wolf Pack Invitational where it shot a combined 847 (288-285-274). Over the season Utah has finished in the top 10 in nine of the 12 tournaments they competed in, five of those were top five finishes.
THE FIELD:
The Utes finished fourth at the 2003 MWC Championships with a team score of 868 (290-289-289). Garrett Clegg was the top Ute, finishing third as he shot a 211 (69-73-69). The 2003 conference champion was New Mexico with a team score of 855. BYU and San Diego State tied for second with a score of 864.
In the current Golf Week national rankings the Mountain West Conference has five teams in the top 40. The top teams are as follows: UNLV (14), New Mexico (19), BYU (22), Colorado State (26) and San Diego State (38). The Utes are currently ranked 88th in the nation according to the same rankings.
