SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team lost their first home match 5-2 to No. 33 Kansas State at the Eccles Tennis Center.
In doubles play, the Utes picked up two wins to earn the point. At the No. 2 spot, senior Sheri Esrock and freshman Cinthia Saucedo downed Jessica Simosa and Judith Diaz (8-4). Senior Rachel Alder teamed up with freshman Jessica Watts to defeat Hayley Mclver and Aveen Alkhatib (8-6) at the No.3. Freshman Whitney Eber and sophomore Jenessa Jackson played at the No. 1 spot but fell to Maria Rosenberg and Paulia Castillejos (8-3).
In singles, Utah only had one win. Jackson downed Alkhajib (6-3, 6-3) at the No. 6 spot. At the No. 1, Esrock fell to Rosenberg (6-3, 6-4). Eber fought hard at the No. 2 but lost to Simosa in three sets (6-2, 0-6, 6-3). Kansas State's Castillejos downed Saucedo (6-2, 6-2) at the No. 3. At the No. 4, Alder lost to Mclver (6-1, 6-0). Playing at the No. 5, Watts gutted it out three sets but eventually fell to Diaz (6-2, 2-6, 7-5).
Head Coach Megan Dorny comments on the match. "Today's match was a good one for our young team. Without Alli Hansen in the line-up we played with two seniors and 4 freshman."
"We were pleased to get the doubles point and besides winning at #6, we were in matches at #2 and #5 with chances to win at those spots. In order to really step it up to the next level we are going to have to convert those opportunities to win into wins."
