SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team beat No. 75 University of Kansas 4-3 at the Eccles Tennis Center.

In doubles play, the Utes fared well but did not pick up the point. At the No. 2 spot, senior Sheri Esrock and freshman Cinthia Saucedo downed Emily Haylock and Ashley Filberth (8-5). Senior Rachel Alder teamed up with freshman Jessica Watts but fell to Christine Skoda and Brittany Brown (8-5) at the No.3. Freshman Whitney Eber and sophomore Jenessa Jackson played at the No. 1 spot and were defeated by Courtney Steinbock and Kristen Steinbock (8-2).

In singles, Utah played tough to come back and win four points. The fourth point came down to Esrock, who ultimately defeated C. Steinbock (7-5, 6-7, 6-3) at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2, Eber fought hard to beat Haylock (6-2, 3-6, 6-1). The losses were at the No. 3 and 4 spots where Saucedo fell to Skoda (6-3, 6-1) and Alder lost to Brown (6-1, 6-1). Watts picked up a win for the Utes at the No. 5, crushing K. Steinbock ( 6-3, 6-4). Playing at the No. 6, Jackson downed Filberth (6-0, 6-3).

Head Coach Megan Dorny comments on the match. "I was really proud of the effort today. I think they came together. For the first time since I have been coaching, we had a team really come together all in the same day. They didn't all play their best but they all played unselfish and did everything they could out there on the court to accomplish the goal, which was pulling out four points today. That's exactly what they did and without winning the doubles point. That is pretty hard to do."

"I am pretty proud of the top of my line, Sheri Esrock and Whitney Eber. Those are tough spots and Whitney's coming in as a freshman and filling some pretty big shoes and doing a great job. Sheri, a senior with a lot of experience, is the one who pulled out the win for us by winning that fourth point."
