The University of Utah men's tennis team defeated the Idaho State Bengals 6-1 on Feb. 11 at the Eccles Tennis Center.
In doubles competition, senior Roeland Brateanu and freshman Miron Mann played at the No. 1 spot and downed Hestian Stoica and Ivan Moferdin (8-5). Sophomore Tomasz Gryzb and freshman Ryan Scott held on to a close win over Butch Stavridis and Marc Pijoan (9-8) at the No. 2. Freshman Jason Yap and sophomore Nick Coutts teamed up at the No. 3 to defeat Jemre Okoh and Ryo Sakamoto (8-3).
The Utes fared well in singles play. At the No.1, Brateanu beat Stoica in three sets (5-7, 7-5, 6-2). Grzyb fell to Stavridis (6-4, 6-4) at the No. 2. At the No. 3, Yap defeated Moferdin (6-2, 7-6) while Mann crushed Pijoan (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 4. Scott downed Pablo Garces (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 5 and freshman Dantley Young held on to beat Masimba Runo (5-7, 7-5 (10-6)) at the No. 6.
Assistant Coach Graeme Cox comments on the match. "The team defeated a very spirited Idaho State team tonight. It was a nice win as some players were a little below par tonight. It is a sign of confidence when you can win when you are not playing your best tennis. Both Roeland and Dantley played well below their best tonight but were still determined enough to find a way to win."
"I felt like our crowd was a huge factor again for us. They were loud and into all of the matches and it certainly helped pull a number of our guys through. The presence of an intense crowd certainly adds to our home court advantage at the Eccles Tennis Center."
