SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to No. 33 Boise State at the Eccles Tennis Center.
The match started out rough for the Utes when they lost the doubles point. In the effort, Utah managed to pick up one win. Sophomore Nick Coutts and freshman Jason Yap defeated Beck Roghaar and Ehren Vaughan (9-7) at the No. 3 spot. Senior Roeland Brateanu teamed up with freshman Miron Mann at the No. 1 and fell to Guillaume Bouvier and Thomas Schoek (8-6). At the No. 2, sophomore Tomasz Gryzb and freshman Ryan Scott were downed by Nils Klemann and James Ludlow (8-6).
In singles, the Utes fared well but were no match for the Broncos. Brateanu, playing at the No. 1 spot, fell to Bouvier (7-5, 6-0). Gryzb was crushed by Schoek (6-4, 6-3) at the No. 2. At the No. 3, Mann experienced his first loss of the season (5-7, 7-5, 10-5) to Matias Silva. Yap was downed by Klemann (6-0, 6-2) at the No. 4 and freshman Dantley Young lost to Mahmound Rezk (6-3, 6-0) at the No. 5. Scott was defeated by Ludlow (6-4, 6-3) at the No. 6.
Utah now has a 4-2 record for the season. The Utes are next in action in California when they match up against Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Stanford, and California Feb. 21-25.
Head Coach F.D. Robbins comments on the match. "Boise State is the best team we have played this year. They're a really good team with a fair amount of experience. Their guys are pretty old, playing wise. We knew going in that we needed to win the doubles point. We won No. 3 doubles and lost the other two at 8-6. It was close in the doubles and if we would have won the doubles match, we could have put some pressure on them in singles."
"We need to get better. They're a good team; I felt from our inexperience, we thought we could hit the better than we could. So we just basically ended up beating ourselves. Most of the first sets were pretty close except for one match and the second sets were relatively easy. That tells you we were playing the way we were but in the second set we started pressing and trying to do too much. Hopefully, we'll learn from this match. Graeme and I need to work on some things and we'll see what we can do in California."
