SALT LAKE CITY - Junior newcomer Katrin Smigun has been awarded Skier of the Year by Ski Racing Magazine after compiling an unprecedented debut season. The two-time Olympian went undefeated on the year, en route to winning both the classical and freestyle races at the NCAA Championship. Smigun was the only dual winner at the Championship.
"Katrin deserves this prestigious award from Ski Racing not only for her athletic performance, but for her leadership on the team," said Head Coach Kevin Sweeny. "Katrin is a class act, who has excelled athletically and academically. I am very happy for her and proud she is a Ute."
After leading the Utes to the NCAA Championship, Smigun was presented with the Toril Forland Outstanding Skier award. This award is given to the female student-athlete, who has been an important factor to the success and accomplishments of the Utah women's ski program.
Currently, Smigun is pursuing a degree in psychology. "I want to learn more about what I'm doing and what I feel," she said. Recently, the junior was named to the Dean's List after upholding a 3.65 GPA during the spring season semester.
