SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- The University of Utah men's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over the Denver Pioneers on Friday night, winning the last two singles matches of the day after falling behind 3-2. The win puts the Utes at 5-6 on the season.
The match started off close with the doubles contests, with Roeland Brateanu and Nick Coutts gaining the narrow win over Urban Ljubic and Nejc Smole 9-8 in no. 1 doubles. No. 2 doubles was also a close Utah success, with Tyler Poulson and Tomasz Grzyb gaining the point for the team with a 9-8 win over Jason Tan and Hans Peter Gaber.
After going ahead 1-0 with the doubles point, the Utes dropped the number one and two singles, falling behind 2-1. Tyler Poulson evened the score for the Utes, with a 7-6, 6-4 defeat of Victor Zetterholm. Nick Coutts almost won a squeaker over Hans Peter Gaber, but fell 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
With the Utes down 3-2, Tomasz Grzyb evened the score again for the Utes in no. 5 singles, with a 7-6, 6-3 triumph over Jason Tan. Kaisorn Chaichana scored the decisive point in favor of the Utes with his 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 conquest of Brian West in the no. six singles.
The Utes now look to hosting Idaho State on March 12 at the Eccles Tennis Center. The match will begin at 5:00 p.m.
