Albuquerque, N.M. -- In the third conference match of the season, the University of Utah women's tennis team came one set away from victory. Ellen Svensson took Laura Nigro to three sets, but came out short in the end, falling 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. The Utah loss puts the season record at 4-9.
The Utes started strong, taking two of the three doubles matches. Allison Hansen and Ellen Svensson teamed for an 8-3 win over Laura Nigro and Gina Black, while Maria Svensson and Sheri Esrock downed Jen Nigro and Kelli O'Bryant 8-3.
In singles action, Sheri Esrock defeated Kat Bushey 6-3, 6-2 in number three singles to gain a second Utah point on the day. Allison Hansen also scored one for the Utes, with her 6-0, 6-1 victory over Katie Tomke in number six singles. In the end, though, the Utes came up short with Hansen falling in a tough number one singles contest.
The Utes will face UNLV and San Diego State this week, meeting UNLV on April 4 and San Diego State on April 5.
