Utah Golf Finishes Second at Wolfpack

RENO, Nev.- - The University of Utah men's golf team shot the lowest round of the Wolfpack Invitational for any team on any round to conclude the tournament on Tuesday. Utah put up a final round of 274 to storm back into contention and ended up with a three-round total of 17-under-par, 847 (288-285-274). The final round took the team from fifth and nine-strokes back after two rounds to a second-place finish falling one-stroke short of eventual winner Denver.
Garrett Clegg anchored the Utes strong finish and won the individual tournament crown at 11-under, 205 (69-68-68). Clegg's final round 68 propelled him from third after two rounds to help him beat out the rest of the field and come away with the one-stroke victory. This marks his second individual tournament win in two years, as he won the Highlander Classic last season.
Casey Fowles contributed a final round 71 to jump from 19th after day one, to 13th with a three-under, 213 (72-71-70), and Luke Swilor shot even-par, 216 (70-76-70), to conclude the tournament in 25th. Steve Newren shot a team-best 66 in the third round to cap off a two-over, 218 total (77-75-66), and finish 34th. Carl Jensen finished at seven-over, 223 (79-71-73) and placed 53rd.
This is the first victory for an individual Ute this season, and the second-place team finish matches its best of the season. Next up for the Utes is a quick turnaround as they will compete in the Fresno-Lexus Classic on Oct. 10-11 in Fresno, Calif.
