SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team avenged an earlier season loss with a 77-36 blowout of the Montana Lady Griz tonight. The Utes shot 47 percent from the field on the game and held Montana to just 29 percent. Utah also pulled down almost twice as many rebounds (50-26) as the Lady Griz.
Freshman Kim Smith led Utah with 16 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Junior Carley Marshall added a game-high 18 points to go along with eight rebounds, while sophomore Shona Thorburn finished with 12 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.
"I'm very pleased with our play tonight," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "One of our issues when we played them earlier this year was their zone. It's big and wide and they are very good at it. The first time, we didn't have a chance to prepare. I think more preparation really helped us.
"We did a nice job of attacking at all places -- from the rim to the three-point line," she continued. "We just had better vision on the court this time around."
Utah, which lost 53-49 to the Lady Griz earlier this season, started junior Mandie Little and freshman Julie Wood for the first time this season. The lineup change was effective, as the Utes owned the first half, holding the Lady Griz to just eight points. Utah also out-rebounded Montana 29-9. The Utes shot nearly 52 percent on the half while holding the Lady Griz to just 14 percent. Additionally, Montana had more fouls (10) in the first half than points (eight).
The Utes held the Lady Griz scoreless for the first five minutes of the game, opening on a 9-0 run. Utah didn't allow another Montana score for 4:54 and then for another 7:42, during which time the Utes scored 19 points. Smith hit her first three treys and notched a double-double with 2:55 left in the first half. She finished the half with 15 points and 12 boards. Marshall added 11 points and five rebounds, while Thorburn dished out six assists on the half.
The second half was played much more closely, with Utah owning a 33-30 advantage. Utah built its biggest lead of the evening (65-18) with 10:42 left in the game. Montana chipped away at the lead, narrowing it to as little as 38, but the first half deficit was too large to overcome. Marshall and Thorburn each had eight points on the half to lead Utah. Thorburn also grabbed six rebounds on the half.
UP NEXT: The Utes (9-3) host Northern Arizona (7-5) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, in the Huntsman Center.
