THIS WEEK:
After a little over a week off, the rested University of Utah ski team will pack up the skies and take to the road as they travel to Boulder, Colo., to compete in the Colorado Invitational, Jan. 31-Feb. 1. Friday's competition will feature the giant slalom and the cross country freestyle events. The slalom and classical races will complete on Saturday.
Times are as followed, the alpine events start at 9:00 a.m. for both the men and the women in both days. Day one of the nordic events, start at 9:30 a.m. for the men and 11:00 a.m. for the women, while day two begins at 9:30 a.m. for the women and 11:00 a.m. for the men.
LAST WEEK:
The Ute cross country team skied to a first-place finish, after wrapping up at the Montana Invitational. Utah finished with a combine total of 575.5 points to take home the victory, while conference rivals Colorado and Denver finished second and third respectively.
The alpine team skied to a second-place finish behind Colorado. Luckily, the cross country team skied well enough in the classical and freestyle events to surpass Colorado and run away with the first-place finish.
In the 10 km FS race, the women's team placed first led by Katrin Smigun. The junior skied first once again with a time of 28:13.0, followed by Sara Svendsen who placed third. Sophomore Barbro Hatlevik grabbed a seventh-place mark, while teammate Ashley McQueen ended the day placing 10th, which is her best result of her career.
In the 15 km FS race, it was Zack Simon's second-place finish that headlined the men's squad. Freshman Jess Kiesel skied eighth, while Anders Hansson finished 11th. Senior Ryan Quinn placed 14th and Tony Bozzio made his mark skiing 28th.
QUOTING COACH KEVIN SWEENEY:
"The Utes are at full numbers going to the Colorado meet. We do have a few nagging injuries and illnesses but overall we are in good shape. I've been very impressed with our training this week. Everyone is charging and the team knows that CU is a tough place to compete. It's a long road trip for us and Eldora (ski resort) can dish up some nasty weather. We will need to be focused and at the top of our game. Like at the Montana Invite, I want us to come out strong and secure good qualifying and team points. After our weekend of non-competition, we need to keep our momentum up in Colorado for our next two meets. I'm very optimistic of our performance potential. We are skiing at a very high level right now."
NEXT WEEK:
The Ute ski team will venture to Gunnison, Colo., to ski in the Western State Invitational. The alpine squad will ski the GS (Feb. 7) and SL (Feb. 8) events, while the cross country team will compete in the 5/10 CL (Feb. 7) and the 10/15 FS (Feb. 8) disciples. Start times are TBA.
