Provo, Utah- The men's golf team finished the first day of competition tied for 10th place at the Cougar Classic. The Utes shot a two-round score of 598 (22-over par), along with UC-Santa Barbara and Boise State. Brigham Young, Colorado State and Nevada lead the field with a seven-under 569.
For the Utes, Luke Swilor finished tied for 16th after shooting a 73 (one-over par) in the first round and a 71 (one-under par) in the second round to finish the day at par (144). Freshmen Ashdon Woods tied for 24th by taking only 73 strokes in both rounds to finish with a two-over 146.
Bruce Summerhays Jr. finished tied for 50th. Summerhays shot a 76 (four-over par) in both rounds to finish the day eight-over (152). Nick Micek and Paul Winterowd both finished in 71st place. Micek and Winterowd took 76 strokes in the first round and shot an 80 (eight-over) in the second round to end the day twelve-over par (156).
The final round will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. MDT. The Utes will then compete in the Mountain West Championships in Sunriver, Ore., next week.
