SALT LAKE CITY -
THIS WEEK: The University of Utah ski team will travel to New Mexico this weekend to compete in the UNM Ski Invitational, Feb. 8-9. Friday's competition will feature the giant slalom and the cross country freestyle competition. The slalom and Sprint Relay events will wrap up racing on Saturday.
PREVIEW: After a string of podium finishes, the Utes are looking for their first team victory of the season. Denver has won the first three invites of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association's season. The New Mexico race will be the final event of the RMISA season before the Regional Championships on Feb. 27-28 in Anchorage, Alaska.
REVIEWING DU INVITE: All-American Scott Woodland blew out his knee in the alpine competition, as the Utes gripped a third-place finish at the New Mexico Invitational. Woodland's season-ending injury hindered Utah's depth in the slalom and giant slalom events. Denver cruised to its third victory of the season, followed by Colorado. Utah held a solid lead over New Mexico for third.
April Mancuso skied to victory in the women's giant slalom and placed fourth in the slalom. Jorunn Oye led the way in the women's sprint and placed second in the classic ski competition. Petter Svendsen earned a third-place finish in the classic and fifth-place showing in the sprint. Pierre Olsson added his fourth podium finish of the season by capturing third in the giant slalom.
UTE NOTES:
*Mancuso's impressive performance at the Denver Invite landed her RMISA Skier of the Week honors. Mancuso has three top-5 finishes on the year.
*The Utes will be compete this week without Torin Koos, who landed a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.
*Scott Woodland's knee injury leaves Utah without one of its team leaders. Woodland has skied to over a dozen top-5 finishes in his career and is a three time All-American with the Utes.
DUE TO OLYMPIC SCHEDULING CONFLICTS, RESULTS OF THE UNM INVITE WILL NOT BE RELEASED UNTIL MONDAY, FEB. 11
