THIS WEEK: The Utes will travel to Anchorage, Alaska to participate in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association's Regional Championships Feb. 27-28. On Wednesday, the women's 5-K classic and men's 10-K classic will open up competition for the cross country team, while the alpine team will take to the slopes for the women's giant slalom and men's slalom.
Thursday's events feature the men's 15-K freestyle and women's 10-K freestyle cross country disciplines along with the men's giant slalom and the women's slalom.
PREVIEW: In the ranks of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association, Utah has been a contender in every event this season. Denver has been the dominant force in the RMISA, taking victory in the first four events of the year. Utah placed second behind DU at the Montana and Nevada invitationals to start the season, but fell behind Colorado for third place finishes in the Denver and New Mexico Invitationals.
The Utes are looking to make their move to dethrone Denver from the top of the podium at the Regional Championships. With defending NCAA slalom champions, Petra Svet and Jernej Bukovec, the Utes are hoping to improve on last season's fourth place showing. In the men's cross country events, senior Petter Svendsen has provided the Utes with solid results this season, finishing in the top five in every classic race and earning two top five finishes in the skate.
Newcomer Pierre Olsson will give Utah a boost in the alpine events. Olsson has notched three podium finishes in the giant slalom this season and has earned two victories and a second place finish in the slalom. Jorunn Oye has given the Utes top-notch finishes in the women's cross country events, with three-consecutive second place finishes in the classic event and three podium finishes -including a first place finish at Denver - in the skate events.
REVIEWING NEW MEXICO: Pierre Olsson's victory in the slalom and second place finish in the giant slalom helped lead Utah to its fourth-consecutive podium finish of the season. The Utes finished third behind Denver and Colorado.
The women's cross country team helped propel Utah to contention with excellent results in the freestyle and classic sprint-relay events. Jorunn Oye raced to a second place finish in the freestyle and teamed up with Sara Svendsen to finish second in the sprint relay. Denise Whitten and Anna Sprague finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the freestyle. Sprague and Maria Lundamo finished seventh in the sprint relay, followed by Whitten and Jaana Kettunen in eighth. Ryan Quinn and Petter Svendsen finished third in the men's sprint relay.
Petra Svet earned RMISA's Women Alpine Skier of the Week award with her second place showing in the slalom and fifth place finish in the giant slalom.
