Utah Women's Hoop Team Crushes Montana Tech 96-42

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team evened its record at 1-1 with a 96-42 rout of Montana Tech tonight. The Utes shot 61 percent on the game and tied the school record for three pointers in a game with 13. Utah out-rebounded the Orediggers 35-25, forced 23 Montana Tech turnovers and held the Orediggers to just 31 percent shooting.
"This was one more game to gain experience and learn more about ourselves," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said.
Six Utes finished in double figures scoring, led by freshman Kim Smith with 17 points. Junior Carley Marshall and sophomore Shona Thorburn added 16 apiece, junior Mandie Little and sophomore Lana Sitterud finished with 15 each and junior Hanna Green had 12. Smith had a game-high four steals, while Marshall pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Thorburn dished out seven assists to lead Utah. She also added five boards.
Utah controlled from the opening tip, scoring seven straight points to open the game. Midway through the first half, the Utes used a 15-0 run to extend its lead to 25 points. Utah shot 53 percent on the half, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. The Utes also out-rebounded the Orediggers 20-11.
The Utes opened the second half with 14 consecutive points to extend their lead to 41. Montana Tech answered with a 13-5 run, but the Utes fired right back, scoring 11 points in a row and winning by 54. Utah shot a blistering 69 percent on the half, including 70 percent from behind the arc.

The Utes travel to Moraga, Calif., to participate in the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic this Friday-Saturday, Nov. 29-30. Utah faces Idaho in the first round at 5 p.m. (PST) on Friday. On Saturday, the Utes will play either St. Mary's or Western Carolina. The consolation game is at 5 p.m., with the championship following at 7:05 p.m. (PST).
