COMING UP:
The University of Utah women's basketball team (0-1) will host Montana Tech tomorrow, Nov. 26, for a 7 p.m. game.
A QUICK LOOK AT UTAH:
The Utes opened the season last Friday with a 54-51 loss at No. 20 Texas Christian in Fort Worth, Texas. The Utes shot just over 31 percent on the game, including 36 percent from three-point range, but only connected on 13 of 24 free throws (.542) in the loss. The Utes were out-rebounded 45-39, but held every TCU player to under 10 points. Sophomore Shona Thorburn led Utah with a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Kim Smith finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Utah led 23-22 at halftime and built its lead to as many as eight points in the second half, but the Frogs chipped away at it and pulled ahead 50-49 with 1:33 left in the game. TCU held on and won the game.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
Montana Tech - The Orediggers (1-6) lost to Black Hills State 93-76 last Friday and to South Dakota Tech 91-68 on Saturday. In the loss to Black Hills State, Tricia Slaughter led the way for Montana Tech with 15 points and six rebounds, while Marcie Alzeheimer finished with 13 points and six boards. Melissa Ritter added 11 points and five rebounds. On Saturday, South Dakota Tech held a narrow 35-32 edge at halftime, but shot a blistering 63 percent from the field in the second half while out-scoring Montana Tech 56-36. Ritter led the Orediggers with 16 points, followed by Alzeheimer with 12, and Slaughter and Stacey Ferentchak with 11 each. Alzeheimer pulled down 11 rebounds and Slaughter, a guard, grabbed 10.
SERIES SHORTS:
* The Utes lead the all-time series with the Orediggers 1-0. The one and only time the two teams met was on Nov. 22, 2000, with Utah winning in a landslide victory 100-33. The Utes are 1-0 at home vs. Montana Tech.
UP NEXT:
The Utes travel to Moraga, Calif., this Friday-Saturday, Nov. 29-30, to participate in the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic. Utah faces Idaho at 5 p.m. (PST) on Friday. On Saturday, the Utes will play either St. Mary's or Western Carolina. The consolation game is at 5 p.m. with the championship game following at 7:05 p.m (PST).
