SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team dominated in exhibition play again tonight, this time defeating the Northwest Sports Stars, a team of former collegiate players, 67-39. The Utes shot just over 39 percent on the game. Utah was out-rebounded 39-36, but forced 27 Star turnovers and committed only eight.
"We struggled from the field, didn't shoot the ball well and fell in love with the three-point shot, but we're moving forward," Head Coach Elaine Elliott said. "I like a lot of things that we're doing, but we still have a lot to work on."
The game opened slow, with no score until almost two minutes in. Utah jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but the Stars went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-8 lead. The Utes tied it a 15 before going on an 11-4 run for a 29-21 lead. At halftime, Utah led 32-25.
The Utes scored five straight points to start the second half, setting the tone for the rest of the game. The Stars didn't score until 2:23 into the half and not again until for another three minutes as part of an 11-2 Utah run, giving the Utes a 43-27 lead. The Stars tried to comeback, scoring 10 straight points, but Utah then held them scoreless for more than 10 minutes and ran away with the 28-point victory.
Utah prevented any of the Star players to reach double digits scoring. It was also the second time in as many games that the Utes held their opponent to 14 points in the second half.
Sophomore Shona Thorburn led all scorers with 16 points. She also added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman Kim Smith finished with 12 points and five boards. Junior Carley Marshall posted a game-high eight rebounds to go along with nine points and four assists.
UP NEXT:
The Utes travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to face Texas Christian for a 5:15 p.m. (CST) game next Friday, Nov. 22.
