THIS WEEK: After two second place finishes to begin the season, the University of Utah ski team is hoping for victory this week when it travels to Winterpark, Colo. for the Denver University Invitational Jan. 25-26. The giant slalom and classical events will take place on Saturday, with the slalom and sprint disciplines wrapping up the invite on Sunday.
PREVIEW: In the first to events of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association, Denver has been the dominant team on the slopes. Utah has had a firm hold on two second place finishes behind Denver. This week, the Utes are hoping to overcome DU on its home turf. Utah's early season success is largely credited to Petter Svendsen, Sara Svendsen and Jorunn Oye, who have finished in the top-10 in each of the cross country races.
Pierre Olsson has three top-five finishes for the Utes, including a first place run in the slalom at the MSU invite. Along with returning NCAA slalom champions, Petra Svet and Jernej Bukovec, the Utes are looking for big results this weekend.
REVIEWING LAST WEEK: The women's cross country team dominated the 10K freestyle with a three-four-five finish. Oye, Jaana Kettunen and Sara Svendsen combined to give Utah the highest point total in the freestyle. Oye added a second place finish in the 7.5K classical, while Svendsen placed third. Zac Simons gave the men's team a boost with a third place finish in the 15K freestyle and a 10th place performance in the 7.5K classical. Petter Svendsen added a fifth place finish in the classical and a sixth place finish in the freestyle.
The Utes helped seal their second place finish with Olsson's second-place finish in the men's slalom and Svet's third-place showing in the women's. Svet added a sixth place run in the giant slalom.
