The University of Utah men's golf team stood in fourth place after the first day of the Mountain West Conference Championship, Monday. Under extremely poor playing conditions, which saw temperatures dip into the 30s, combined with strong winds and rain, senior Brock Padilla paced the Utes with a four-over par 76.
Padilla was tied for seventh after the first day of action. Only one player, Colorado State's James Kurtenbach, parred the first round, shooting a 72.
Team standings at the par 72 Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore., on the first day of the three-day tourney: 1. Colorado State (301, +13), 2. Brigham Young (305, +17), 3. San Diego State (307, +19), 4. Utah (313, +25), 5. New Mexico (314 (+26), 6. UNLV (316, +28), 7. Wyoming (317, +29) and 8. Air Force (332, +44).
Other Ute individual placings through the first 18 holes of play: 14. Luke Swilor (78, +6), 17. Shawn Edwards (79, +7), 22. Paul Winterowd (80, +8) and 35. Ryan Ellis (83, +11).
