PHOENIX, ARIZ.-The University of Utah golf team braved the wind and rain and played a strong final day at the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational to move from fifth to fourth place with a 15-over par 879.
After being 20 strokes behind the leader and eventual team winner Grand Canyon, and eight strokes in back of second place finisher Cal State Stanislaus, the Utes surpassed Weber State and finished a mere four shots behind Cal State.
Shawn Edwards was the top Ute, firing a two-day total of two-under par 214, moving up one spot on the individual titleist list to place fourth. Ryan Ellis came into the club house in sixth place with a one-over par 217. Paul Winterowd was eight-over par for the tournament, while Luke Swilor stayed one stroke behind Winterowd. Clint Christiansen posted a 237 for the Utah team effort.
The Ute linksters head to the Ben Hogan Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah April 20-21.
