PHOENIX, ARIZ. - The University of Utah golf team finished the first day at the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational at the Palm Valley Golf Course in fifth place with a seven-over par 583.
Utah finished 20 strokes from the leader, host Grand Canyon University who went into the clubhouse at 563. Utah is still in the hunt for second place, only eight strokes behind Central Oklahoma, who posted a one-under par 575.
Senior Shawn Edwards led the Utes, finishing fifth individually on the day, firing a one-under par 143. He put up scores of 71 and 72 for the 36-hole total. Edwards is seven strokes back of leaders John and Andy Davis of Grand Canyon, who fired an eight-under par 136.
Senior Ryan Ellis is one shot behind Edwards with a 36-hole total of 144, par for the course.
Junior Paul Winterowd came in at four-over par with a 148, while freshman Luke Swilor swung his way to a 149. Senior Clint Christiansen posted a 159.
Utah will try to make up some ground today in the final rounds of the event.
