The Utah golf team opened the 2001 spring season with a 17th place finish at the John Burns Intercollegiate, played on the Leleihua Golf Course. The Utes finished at 21-over par with a score of 885. The University of New Mexico won the tournament with a three-round score of 832, 32-under par.
Shawn Edwards was the top Ute individual with his 1-under par 215. He finished tied for 25th. It was the second straight top-25 finish for Edwards, and his 215 was the lowest three-round score for a Ute this season. Michael Letzig of New Mexico was the individual champion with a 17-under par 199.
Paul Winterowd finished tied for 51st with a 5-over par 221. Ryan Ellis finished in a group tied for 57th, with a score of 222, 6-over par. Luke Swilor shot 13-over 229, good for a 86th place tie, and Brock Padilla finished tied for 95th with a 19-over par, 235.
The Utes 290 in the third round was their lowest score of the year. Paul Winterowd set the mark for lowest round by an individual this season with his third round 69.
Utah is now off until March 5-6 when they travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. to compete in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
