THIS WEEK: The University of Utah alpine ski team will travel to Bozeman, Mont. this week to open up the 2002 season at the Montana Invitational. The Utes, who are ranked third in the preseason NCAA coaches poll, are looking for strong opening performance. Alpine competition will take place Jan. 4-5, while the cross country disciplines will wrap up competition on Jan. 9-10.
The cross country team will be on the road this week competing in the U.S. Cross Country Nationals on Jan. 5.
PREVIEW: The return of national champions Petra Svet and Jernej Bukovec provide promise to a team that finished fourth at last year's NCAA championships. Though training has been limited due to Olympic and Gold Cup preparations, the Utes are optimistic about their focus, health and team cohesion.
The Utes hope to contend for the national championship this season. In the preseason polls, they trail only Denver. Utah tied Colorado for second place in the voting, but the Buffaloes received more first-place votes to break the tie. The Utes are looking to make a statement at the season opener.
UTE NOTES: Olympic hopeful, Torin Koos, competed in the World Cup competition held last week in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. As the only American racing, he finished 20th in the freestyle sprint race. In November, Koos won the Continental Cup competition held in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Utes are looking for big results from Koos this season.
QOUTING COACH KEVIN SWEENEY: "This team has had a great fall training period. We have good depth and are ready to race. Many coaches know we are strong, others doubt our ability. The season-opener is always exciting to see how each team performs. We plan to go to Montana and score well right off the bat to secure NCAA qualifying points."
