SALT LAKE CITY - Utah head basketball coach Rick Majerus will be presented a Service Award on behalf of Intermountain Donor Services prior to tonight's game against Idaho State in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Making the presentation will be Miss Utah 2001, Jackie Hunt, whose platform is organ donation awareness.
Intermountain Donor Services is recognizing Majerus for his efforts to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation. Thousands of lives are saved or enhanced because of organ and tissue donation each year.
Majerus comes from a family tradition of organ donation. His father was an organ donor, and he and his mother are current registered donors. He has supported donation awareness with autographed items for fundraisers and recorded a radio public service announcement for the Wisconsin Donor Network. Furthermore, Majerus has made numerous appearances at fundraisers in California, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Idaho, Nevada and Utah supporting this cause that he feels so passionately about. Majerus wears a green donor pin each game to remember the daughter of a friend, Sarah Hegarty, who died several years ago with failing organs.
"I'm very proud to be the son of a father who donated his organs and a mother who is scheduled to donate hers," says Majerus. "I, myself, have signed off on organ donation and encourage others to do so. In the Christmas season, this is the best gift of all. It is truly the gift of life and a gift that keeps on giving. So many are so needy. You, as a donor, are able to give something that goes beyond the parameters of your life and significantly touches the lives of so many others."
