The University of Utah men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted UNLV on Saturday in a dual meet. The Ute women defeated UNLV for the first time in Utah school history with a score of 117-114. The women improve to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 MWC. The men fell to No. 23 UNLV by a score of 149.5 to 89.5. The Ute men fall to 0-2 on the season and in the MWC. The UNLV's women fall to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 MWC, while the men improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 MWC.
The women were led by sophomore Neringa Statkeviciute who finished first in the two individual events she competed in. Stakeviciute took top honors in the 50 free (24.16) for the second straight week, she also won the 100 free for the fourth straight week with a time of 51.59. Senior Courtney McKinney and Loren Sweny finished first in the 200 IM and the 200 back respectively, while diver Kerri Fiori won the one meter diving event with a score of 199.35.
Freshman Evan Castro led the men's team by finishing first in the 200 breast (2:07.31) and second in the 200 free. David Johnson, a native of Salt Lake, finished first in the 200 back with a time of 1:55.45.
"Our teams did a tremendous job," says head coach Mike Litzinger. "The women overcame a huge hurdle with this win, and we will look to improve on this success. Our men continue to improve each meet and fought hard against UNLV."
