University of Utah skier, Torin Koos, was among 12 cross country skiers named to compete in the World Nordic Ski Championships Feb. 16-25 in Lahti, Finland. Koos, who was among the top competitors in the recent World Cup events held at Soldier Hollow, earned his spot on the team with his performance in the events held during the Visa U.S. Nordic Ski Festival.
Former Ute Skiers Justin Wadsworth, Marcus Nash, and Rob Whitney will also be representing the U.S. at the Ski Championships. Nash and Whitney were both All-American competitors for the U. under the direction of current head coach Kevin Sweeney. Whitney earned the honor in 2000, while Nash reached the status in 1993. Wadsworth was an All-American in 1988.
According to U.S. Nordic Director, Luke Bodensteiner, the selections were based on the results from the recent World Cup events. "This was a really competitive selection process and I'm very pleased with this group of athletes," Bodensteiner says. "Several of the athletes stepped up their performances during the World Cups at Soldier Hollow, making our selections clear."
Koos, a sophomore Ute competitor from Leavenworth, Wash., will be among five first-time competitors at the championships.
