Despite a great performance by the men's cross country team on the final day of competition, the Utah ski team placed third in the nordic portion of the University of Utah Invitational, which wrapped up on Jan. 16. The competition was dominated by Denver, who tallied a 277 two-day point total. New Mexico was a distance second, scoring 227, followed by Utah with 223.
The Ute men took control of the 15 kilometer freestyle, placing four skiers in the top 10. Pat Casey led the Utes with a third place finish behind Pietro Broggini of Denver and Tomas Dohnal of New Mexico. Petter Svendsen was awarded fourth place points, after finishing sixth behind two non-scorers. Torin Koos and Zack Simons finished eighth and ninth, respectively. The Utes' top-three scorers totalled 71 points, with the next best being Denver with 64.
The top Ute finisher in the women's 10 kilometer freestyle was Lene Pedersen, who racked up a 14th place finish. Kristina Joder placed 19th and Ingrid-Anne Ingvoldstad placed 25th.
Denver also won the overall standings, with the scores from the alpine and cross country events combined. Utah came away with third, falling behind second place Colorado.
