Torin Koos, a sophomore skier at the University of Utah was thrown into Sunday's World Cup competition at the U.S. Nordic Ski Festivel at Soldier Hollow, as a substitute for the U.S. team. Koos took the place of Marcus Nash in the 1.5 kilometer freestyle sprints.
Koos stayed competitive with the front-runners and became the only American to qualify for the quarterfinals, as he posted the 16th-fastest time in the qualifying round. Koos' teammate, Patrick Casey, placed 29th overall but did not advance to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Koos was unable to finish in the top two of his heat to advance on in the World Cup competition. His time ranked him in 12th place in his World Cup debut. Not bad for the competitor who hales from the "apple capital of the world," Leavenworth, Washington.
In November, he was recognized as the Pacific Northwest Skier of the Year by the National Cross Country Ski Education Foundation. Not a stranger to intense competition, Koos was the first alternate on the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games. He competed at last year's NCAA nationals. He was five-time Junior All-American and was the 1999 junior champion at Prologue.
Koos is also a member of the Utah track and cross country running teams.
