SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah is tied for sixth place at the inaugural Mountain West Conference golf championship after the first round of play at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course (par 72, 6,921 yards) in Palm Desert, Calif. The Utes shot 308 (+20) on Monday. UNLV is in first place with a seven-stroke lead over Colorado State after the first day.
Shawn Edwards is Utah's only player in top 10. The junior is tied with four other players for seventh place (38-34--72). Ryan Ellis is in 22nd place (36-40--76) and Gregg Oliphant is one stroke behind in 27th place (37-40--77). Clint Christiansen (43-40--83) and Brock Padilla (43-41--84) are 38th and 39th, respectively.
The second round of play resumes Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. (Pacific Time).
