SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah track and field team will close out its season this week at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 17-20 in Provo, Utah. The heptathlon and decathlon will be held on Wednesday beginning at 12:30 p.m. and Thursday beginning at 12:00 p.m. Qualifying trials and some finals will be held on Friday with competition starting at 1:00 p.m. The finals will be held on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. with the awards ceremony scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
Head coach Mike Jones has most of his athletes participating in their regular events. An athlete that usually competes in more than one event will compete in the event in which they have the best opportunity to score points for the team.
"Some of our athletes still have an opportunity to qualify for nationals so they will compete in that particular event," says Jones.
Since Utah does not field a complete men's team, Jones anticipates they will finish last in the conference. While the women do have a complete team, they lack collegiate competition experience. The women's team is young with only three seniors: Elisha Kekacs, Katherina Gallahar and Johanna Nielsen.
"I think we will do well individually in some of the events, but we are an awfully young team and still lack team competition experience," says Jones.
Seniors Johanna Nielsen and Chris Merkley have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 and 5,000 meters, respectively. Since they have not automatically qualified, they will not know if they have been invited to compete in the championships for another week. The NCAA Championships will be held May 31-June 3 in Durham, N.C., hosted by Duke University.
