Last year: Utah finished eighth out of 17 teams at this tournament last year. Oliphant placed 14th (219), Edwards finished 65th (230) and Padilla placed 72nd (231) for the Utes. Ellis tied for first (211) at this tournament two years ago as a freshman playing for Utah Valley State College. "The Cougar Classic is a big tournament with a lot of conference teams so it will be very competitive,"says head coach Wayne Fisher. "BYU will be tough to beat on their home course. It's nice to play a tournament in Utah because we receive good support from family and friends."
Last week: The Utes are coming off a seventh place finish at the Grand Canyon/Thunderbird Invitational where Padilla had his best outing of the year to take 12th place (218). The Utes tied for the low round of 284 on the final day. "It was nice to finish that tournament with a strong round," says Fisher. "Even though we played well, we still came off the course knowing that we could have done better. The team seems to be gelling and we are building momentum at the right time."
Up next: The Utes will have a week off before the Mountain West Conference tournament begins May 1-3 at the PGA West Resort Course in Palm Desert, Calif.
