SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah track and field outdoor season gets into full swing this week as eight athletes travel to California to compete in two invitationals.
Travis Hildebrand, Chris Merkley, Teren Jameson and Johanna Nielsen will compete in the 5,000 meter open at the Stanford Invitational on Sat. Mar. 25. All four athletes are trying to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the end of May. "It is early enough in the season that if they don't qualify at Stanford they can compete in other invitationals and may qualify for nationals later in the season," says head coach Mike Jones.
Katherina Gallahar, Chantel Goldsberry, Audrey Kiser and Elisha Kekacs will compete in the Cal State Northridge Invitational Mar. 24-25. Gallahar, Goldsberry and Kiser will throw the hammer. "This is the first outdoor hammer competition of the year," says Jones. "We really want to establish some good start marks for the beginning of the season and progress from there." Kiser will also participate in the shot put and Goldsberry will compete in the discus. Kekacs will compete in both the 100 and 400-meter hurdles.
Up next: Utah has two weeks off before the Weber State Invitational in Ogden, Utah, on Apr. 8.
