SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah track and field team will travel to Ogden, Utah, to participate in the Weber State Invitational on Sat., Feb.12. This will be the last indoor meet before the Mountain West Conference Championships on Feb. 24-26 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Head Coach Mike Jones will utilize this meet for competitive training purposes. "This meet will be used as a final tune-up before the conference championships. We will drop the athletes down an event and have them compete in a shorter distance from what they usually compete in. It will function as a speed workout under competitive conditions to help get them ready."
Jones was pleased with the team's performance last weekend at the Mountain States Games which included two first place finishes: Audrey Kiser in the weight throw open and Nephi Tyler in the mile open. "I thought we did great last week," he says. "I hoped the throwers would have improved a bit more. They didn't decrease their distances but they didn't increase them as much as I would have liked." A new school record was set by the men's distance relay team which included Teren Jameson, Chris Merkley, Adam Stark and Nephi Tyler. The new time of 10:05.61 shattered the old school record by more than nine seconds. The Utes also had several personal best performances which in turn have affected the rankings on Utah's all-time top-performance list.
Junior Shanae Nixon, who placed fourth last week in the pentathlon won't compete this weekend due to a stress fracture in her foot. "Right now it doesn't look like she will be back in time to compete at the conference championships," says Jones.
The Utes have a week off to prepare for the Mountain West Conference Championships on Feb. 24-26 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
