SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team opened up the inaugural Mountain West Conference season with an impressive 7-2 victory over Colorado State.
Utah swept doubles play, while winning four of six singles matches. Megan Payne-Dorny and Cassie Kasteler secured the match with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Frida Kareld and Irini Kotoglou took their Ram opponents by the same score at No. 2, while Linn Ronnberg and Brooke Wilkinson added to the team lead with an 8-4 triumph.
"Every single player showed great fight," said assistant Ute coach Adam Eke. "Colorado State is a very competitive team. It was a positive early season win for us, especially to open conference."
Payne-Dorny, ranked No. 79, continued her success, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. Kotoglou, Kareld, and Ronnberg also had singles wins.
The Rams positives came from Amanda Bartz at No. 3 singles and Bobbie Vasos in the No. 6 slot.
"We played competitively for our first match. Utah is more adapted to the competitive atmosphere than we are, having played a match and tournament already," states Ram head coach John Messick. "We should improve with each match experience. Later in the season, this match could go our way."
