SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah golf team begins its season Sept. 17 in Colorado Springs, Colo., when the Utes play in the Cross Creek Invitational hosted by Air Force. Competing against a field of 22 other schools, the 54-hole three day tournament begins on Friday and finishes on Sunday, with one round played each day. Participating in the tournament will be this year's team captain Gregg Oliphant, Lance Richards, Brock Padilla, Shawn Edwards and Clint Christiansen.
"You never know what to expect starting the year off, but I think that we can be successful at this tournament," Head Coach Wayne Fisher says. "Everyone has played this course before, except Lance, so I feel like we know this course and should do quite well. I think that our depth will keep us competitive throughout the tournament."
Utah finished 13th at this tournament last year with Brock Padilla placing 26th out of 116 golfers. He shot a 219 and finished at three over. Shawn Edwards placed 49th shooting 223, Gregg Oliphant shot a 228 and finished 78th and Clint Christiansen shot a 236 placing 102nd.
Utah has experience on its side this season with six out of the seven golfers returning from last year's team. Ryan Ellis rounds out the team as a junior college transfer from Utah Valley State College where he played with current teammate Lance Richards.
Utah's next tournament will be the CSU Ram Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo., Sept. 27-28.
