SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah ski team turned in a fourth place finish this weekend at the Nevada Western Regional Invitational. In a very tight competition, Colorado took first place with 517 points followed by Denver in second with 513. The battle for third place was equally close as New Mexico edged the Utes by two points. The Lobos amassed 409, to Utah's 407.
It was the men's alpine team that led the Utes on this weekend. Freshman Scott Woodland had his best collegiate competition with two second place finishes, in the slalom and the giant slalom. Three Utah skiers placed in the top ten of the men's giant slalom, including Woodland, Ryan Forsyth at eighth, and Markus Leunig who took tenth. The women's alpine team also had a strong showing.
Tina Kavcic was strong in both the women's slalom and giant slalom. Kavcic placed sixth and fifth respectively. Sabrina Lawrence turned in the highest result, taking second in the women's slalom. The Utes have one week to prepare for the NCAA Championships in Sunday River, Maine from Mar. 10-13. Only those qualified will travel to compete in the championships. A list of those going will be available as soon as possible.
