FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The University of Utah track and field team competed in the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship over the weekend.
The women's team placed ninth and the men's team 10th in Utah's last championship in the Western Athletic Conference. Senior Jeff Simonich remains the conference champion for another year in the 5,000 meters (14:47.95), an event he will compete in at the NCAA outdoor championship in June.
Also in the 5,000, junior Chris Merkely placed fifth (14:59.43) and Travis Hildebrand finished eighth (15:07.68) for Utah. Senior Dane Miller placed third in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 31:41.12. Also placing in the top ten for Utah were Larry Stanley (9:24.46) and Erik Vernon (9:32.27) in the 3,000 meter steeple chase finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. On the women's side, freshman Erianne Allen placed fourth in the heptathlon (4,548) for Utah.
Senior Amy Tidwell (52.87) took second place in the 400 meter dash and fifth in the long jump (41'02.25"). Junior Amber Radke (39:45.05) placed seventh in the 10,000 meter run and Elisha Kekacs (61.84) finished sixth in the 400 meter hurdles. Senior Stacey Rhineer (5'08.50") finished fourth in the high jump and third in the triple jump (41'02.25").
Sophomore Mindy Romig placed sixth in the javelin throw (14 OE11.00"). Utah's women also placed sixth in the 4x400 meter relay. Seniors Jeff Simonich and Amy Tidwell will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championsips June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho.
Simonich will compete in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters and Tidwell will compete in the 400 meters and the long jump.
