ELDORA, Colo. _ The University of Utah held off host Colorado as the 1998 NCAA West Ski Regional came to a close. This was Utah's third first place finish in invitationals and it's second in a row.
The top two ranked teams in the nation and perennial western powers dueled until the last of the eight events Friday. Utah eventually finished on top with 474 points to Colorado's 451. New Mexico overhauled Denver to take third place with 345 points, followed Denver (327), Alaska- Anchorage (286), Western State (229), Nevada (179) and Montana State (26).
"It's nice to win the regional meet, and it gives us a lot of momentum going into nationals," Utah head coach Pat Miller said. "We're beginning to put things together as a team, and we skied strong again today. Hopefully, we can just keep it up."
All throughout the meet, Utah and Colorado skiers were competing for top spots in each discipline. In the men's 15K freestyle, brothers Rune and Frode Kollerud finished second and third behind Colorado's Ove Erik Tronvoll.
In the Women's 10K Freestyle, the two school showed their dominance once again as they occupied seven of the top eight finishing spots. The race was won by Line Selnes of Colorado who was trailed by Utah's Hailey Wappett.
In alpine events, Ryan Forsyth finished second in the men's slalom followed by Mike Elvidge who placed fourth. The women's slalom featured Sabrina Lawrence who took second for the Utes. Marianne Winge, Alicia Howard and Sandra Kuehni also helped Utah to victory as they all placed in the top ten.
The regular season in collegiate skiing is now over, as schools will have a week off before descending on Bozeman, Mont. For the NCAA Championships, March 11-14.
