SALT LAKE CITY - After two days of competition the University of Utah Ski Team earned third place at the New Mexico Ski Invitational on Feb. 5 and 6. The Utes finished with 425 points, 16 behind second place finishers, and host New Mexico. Defending NCAA Champion Colorado took first place with 478 points, 53 ahead of Utah.
On the second day of the Invitational, many strong performances were turned in by the Ute skiers. In the women's giant slalom, Sabrina Lawrence finished just .19 seconds behind winner Aimee-Noel Hartley from Colorado to place second. Utah senior Tina Kavcic finished seventh in the same race. Ute freshman Scott Woodland turned in the highest finish of his career taking second in the men's giant slalom. Woodland, along with Markus Leunig and Ryan Forsyth who finished within the top 15. Twin brothers Frode and Rune Kollerud finished second and third respectively in the men's 10K cross country skate, tallying 78 race points for the Utes.
Hailey Wappett, in the women's 5K cross country skate finished a team high, ninth place in this event. The Utes continue the regular season next weekend in Crested Butte, Colorado. This Invitational, hosted by Western State College, will be the fourth of the year for Utah.
