MALIBU, Calif. - The Utah men's tennis team played the first match of a week long pacific coast road trip on Mar. 10, falling 6-1 to Pepperdine. The No. 72 Utes' record dropped to 4-7 while No. 12 Pepperdine improved its record to 12-2.
In doubles play, Pepperdine won two of three matches to capture the doubles point. In the No. 1 match, Kelly Gullett and John Hui downed Utah's Ben Coates and Philippe Rodrigue, currently ranked 19th in the nation, 8-5. At No. 2, Sebastien Graeff and Anthony Ross downed Trevor Ferguson and Kevin Zenger, 8-3. The Utes did prevail in the last match as Ashley Dyer and Nik Yip outlasted Eni Ghidirmic and Oliver Schweizer, 9-8.
In singles play, Pepperdine won five of the six singles matches, as Utah escaped with one win at No. 5, where Adam Eke defeated John Hui, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. At No. 1, Gullett downed Coates, 6-2, 6-3, and Graeff outlasted Dyer, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Pepperdine was victorious at No. 3 and No. 4 as Ross clipped Ferguson, 6-4, 7-5, and Chad Exon ousted Patrick Wallebring, 6-2, 4-6. In the No. 6 match, Schweizer thumped Yip, 6-1, 6-2.
The trip continues on Monday, Mar. 15, when the Utes stay in California to play San Diego.
