The University of Utah men's tennis team dropped its second WAC match of the season, falling to visiting Fresno State 6-1, on Wednesday, March 31. The Utes season record falls to 5-10 on the year, and 0-2 in conference play.
Utah jumped out to a promising start winning all three doubles matches. At No. 1, Ben Coates and Philippe Rodrigue, who are currently ranked 15th in the nation, knocked off Andy Scorteanu and Joe Gilbert, 8-6. Trevor Ferguson and Kevin Zenger dropped Peter Luczak and David Mullins, 9-8, at No. 2, while Ashley Dyer and Nik Yip topped Olivier LeJeune and Nick Fustar, 8-4 at the No. 3 position.
The doubles point would prove to be the only point the Utes would win in the match. The Bulldogs swept singles play, starting off with LeJeune who defeated Coates, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1. Rodrigue fell to Luczak, 6-3, 7-5, while Scorteanu dropped Dyer 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Ferguson fell to Mullins, 6-4, 6-3, and Rob Cheyne blanked Adam Eke, 6-0, 6-3. Fresno completed the sweep at the No. 6 position as Fustar defeated Zenger, 7-5, 6-2.
Utah hosts two matches this weekend against conference opponents. The Utes match up against UNLV on Friday, April 2, and then against UTEP on Saturday, April 3. Both matches will be at the Eccles Tennis Center. Admission is free.
