Salt Lake City - The University of Utah women?s basketball team announced the signing of three prep recruits Monday. Head Coach Elaine Elliott received National Letters of Intent from Amy Bastman, Caroline Matthews and Kelsy Stireman.
Bastman is a 6-0 guard from Gilbert, Arizona, where she averaged 10.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.2 steals per game last season. She was a 1999 all-region and honorable mention all-state selection. Bastman was also a 1999 honorable mention USA Today All-American pick.
?Amy will give us a more physical six-foot wing player. We?ll be looking for good things from her in terms of rebounding as well,? said Elliott.
Matthews is a 6-3 forward from Preston, Victoria, Australia. Caroline played at Santa Maria College, a prep school in Australia, where she was a member of an under 18 All-Australian Squad. She was also a representative player for Victorian State Side in the Australian Championships.
?Caroline is a position four player who should fit very well into our program,? said Elliott. It is very exciting to have a player on our roster from a different part of the world in terms of recruiting.?
Stireman is a 5-7 point guard from Bonneville High School in Ogden, Utah. She averaged 19.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 8.8 assists and 5.9 steals per game in 1999. Stireman was a 1999 all-state and Region 4 Player of the Year as well as the 1999 John Wooden/Frank Layden Terrific Twelve recipient. She was a 1999 All-Tournament End of the Oregon Trail selection and an honorable mention USA Today All-American.
?It is always exciting to get the best player in the state come and play for you,? said Elliott. Kelsy is a total gym rat and has a huge love of the game. She is a nice addition and will fit very well into our system.?
