SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah golf team has accepted a late invitation to play in the Pacific Match Play Intercollegiate, Nov. 8-9 in Coppperopolis, Calif., at the Saddle Creek golf course. An inaugural event hosted by University of the Pacific, the eight-team tournament will be seeded by the coaches. The teams will play each other in a match play format.
"It's a different format and a different way for players to compete," says Head Coach Wayne Fisher. "It's a nice change from the normal stroke play. I like it because it is something new to be a part of. We may see other tournaments like it cropping up."
Utah will play with seven other schools, No.25 Arizona, Boise State, No.11 Brigham Young, Fresno State, Long Beach State, UC-Santa Barbra, and Pacific. Fisher anticipates a sixth, seventh or eigth seed for Utah, which means the Utes could face Mountain West Conference rival BYU in the first round. "This tournament will be another good opportunity for us to see how well we play against other quality teams," says Fisher.
Competing for the Utes will be Brock Padilla, Ryan Ellis, Shawn Edwards, Gregg Oliphant and walk-on freshman Jake Sowby. Sowby, a Salt Lake City native, will make his first appearance for Utah. "Jake had considered making this his redshirt year, but with the scores he*s been shooting he deserves to make this trip," says Fisher. "It will be a great experience for him."
Utah begins its spring golf season on Feb. 23 at the John Burns Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii.
