Utes earned their ninth three-set win to open Big 12 play

BOULDER, Colo.– Utah Volleyball swept No. 21 Colorado (26-24, 25-22, 25-17) on the road to open Big 12 Conference play Friday night at the CU Events Center.

The Utes' victory over the Buffaloes is their ninth sweep of the 2026 season and keeps Utah undefeated in three-set matches.

Utah's 9-3 start to the season under Alyssa D'Errico is the best in program history under a first-year head coach.

SET ONE
Utah raced to an early 4-2 lead over Colorado to start Big 12 play, highlighted by a Sierra Grizzle ace, two Kamyrn Gibadlo kills and one kill from Loryn Helgesen.

The Utes went up 9-4 on the Buffs after Gibadlo got hot from the service line, nailing two aces along with two Buffalo attack errors.

CU tied the first set at 11, before taking its first lead, 12-11. The Utes and Buffs went back-and-forth until Colorado reached 15 first for the technical break, 15-14.

The Buffaloes went up by as much as three (18-15) before Utah came storming back to tie things up after a long rally at 19.

Colorado native, Ashley West, appropriately got the Utes to set point, 24-22, before the Buffaloes answered back, 24-23. Out of a Utah timeout, Colorado tied the set one more time at 24.

Katelynn Field settled the Utes and got them to set point again before an Isabella Mogridge ace iced set one for Utah, 26-24.

SET TWO
Set two started with a Colorado fast lead, 7-1. Princess Atamah got Utah its second point off a kill to make it 7-2.

The Utes got within four points of the Buffs (8-4) before Colorado sped off, 11-4. Utah went on a 3-0 run to make the set an 11-7 affair.

Isabelle Marco hit an ace to get the Utes within four of Colorado again (14-10) but the Buffaloes hit 15 to send the set to the media timeout, 15-10.

Out of the timeout, Utah went on a tear going on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 15, forcing Colorado to take a timeout.

The Utes and Buffs kept it close down the stretch, remaining tied at 22. Utah took the lead, prompting Colorado to take its last timeout of the set off a Gibadlo kill, 23-22. Atamah and West teamed up on a block to give the Utes set point with Gibadlo making quick work off a kill, 25-22.

SET THREE
The Utes kept the momentum going, jumping to a 4-2 lead over the Buffaloes early in set three. Utah kept the pressure up, taking an 8-5 lead off a kill from Devyn Wiest.

Gibadlo gave the Utes a 12-8 advantage, but Colorado came back on a 3-0 run, 12-11.

For the first time in the match, the Utes sent the set to the media timeout, 15-12, off a Helgesen kill.

Back-to-back kills from Wiest out of the break, followed by a Grace Moss ace, extended Utah's lead, 18-12.

Utah reached a 20-14 lead off a Atamah/West teamed block, forcing Colorado to take its last timeout of the night.

The Utes kept their foot on the gas, hitting match point from a West kill before Gibadlo gave Utah its ninth sweep of the season, 25-17.

Utah recorded its ninth sweep and is undefeated in three-set matches in 2026
The Utes logged 48 kills to the Buffs' 26 and recorded a .207 hitting percentage compared to .083 for Colorado
Utah posted 6 aces to CU's 1, and had 51 digs to Colorado's 31
Utah finished set one with a .000 hitting percentage while Colorado was -.029. The Utes racked up 23 digs while the Buffs had eight blocks and 13 digs
Gibadlo had an outstanding night recording a team high 14 kills, 3 aces, and 6 digs
Helgesen was second on the team in kills with 11 and added 5 digs
Field (.667 hitting percentage off 6 kills and 9 attempts) and West (.333 hitting percentage off 8 kills and 15 attempts) proved to be Utah's steady shooters
Grizzle and Atamah were solid in Utah's defense recording 16 digs and 9 blocks respectively
Mogridge and Marco kept Utah's offense moving logging 22 and 15 assists on the night

Utah comes home to the Huntsman Center for its Big 12 opener against No. 17 Baylor on Sunday, Sep. 27, with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m. MT.
